Banh Giay and Banh Chung
Once upon a time, King Hung VI decided to hold a competition for his sons to welcome the coming Tet. The son who won would become the next king. He said to his sons, “You must find the most special and delicious food in the land”.
The princes searched the land. Each time they found a delicious food, they took it to their father and hoped they would be king. The poorest 18th prince, Lang Lieu, was a very kind person. He stayed at home to take care of his father. One day, Lang Lieu dreamed of a new food which was made with rice. He thought rice was the most special food in the land.
He got up and started to make one cake in the square form of earth called banh chung, and one in the round form of sky called banh giay. The cakes were made from stiky rice, pork, and green beans. Banh chung was wraped in dong leaves and tied with bamboo strings.
The king really loved the cakes. He decided that Lang Lieu would be the next king. He sent the recipe for banh chung and banh giay to all the people in the land. From that day on, Vietnamese people cook these special cakes at Tet and at other celebrations.

Một ngày, Vua Hùng thứ VI quyết định tổ chức cuộc thi để các con trai chào đón Tết. Những người con, ai giành chiến thắng sẽ được kế nhiệm. Vua nói với các con trai, “Các con phải tìm ra thức ăn ngon và đặc biệt nhất trên đất mẹ”
Các hoàng tử tìm kiếm trên mặt đất. Mỗi lần họ tìm thấy thức ăn ngọn, họ đều lấy về thưa cha của họ, và hy vọng họ sẽ trở thành vua. Hoàng tử thứ 18 nghèo nhất, Lang Liêu, là một người rất tốt bụng. Anh ấy vẫn ở nhà và chăm sóc cho vua cha. Một ngày, Lang Liêu mơ về một món ăn mới, món ăn được làm từ gạo. Anh ấy nghĩ rằng gạo là món ăn đặc biệt nhất từ đất mẹ.
Anh ấy thức dậy và bắt đầu làm một cái bành hình vuông được gọi là bánh chưng và một cái bánh hình tròn được gọi là bánh giày. Những chiếc bánh được làm từ gạo nếp, thịt lợn và đậu xanh. Bánh chưng được gói trong lá dong và được buộc bằng sợi lạt làm từ tre.
Nhà vua thực sự yêu thích bánh này. Vua quyết định Lang Liêu sẽ trở thành vị vua kế nhiệm. Vua đã gửi bánh chưng và bánh giày tới tất cả mọi người trong xứ. Từ ngày đó, người Việt Nam nấu loại bánh đặc biệt này cho dịp Tết hoặc những dịp đặc biệt khác.
