Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định:

- Được sử dụng để giúp người đọc, người nghe xác định chính xác người, sự vật, hiện tượng, sự việc đang được nói tới trong câu là ai, cái gì.

- Chức năng: định ngữ và bổ sung ý nghĩa cho danh từ hoặc cụm danh từ đứng trước nó.

- Không thể lược bỏ mệnh đề quan hệ xác định của câu.

Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định:

- Được dùng để bổ sung ý nghĩa cho một danh từ hoặc cả một mệnh đề trước đó của câu. Mệnh đề này thường sau danh từ, hay mệnh đề mà nó bổ nghĩa.
