Making narratives sound more interesting To make narratives sound more interesting, you should: - Use strong adjectives, NOT “very + adjective” (e.g. freezing, incredible, awesome, terrible, horrible, delicious, huge, tiny, etc.). You should avoid using “very + adjective” too many times as it becomes repetitive. We laughed for ten minutes. It was hilarious. (Sounds more interesting than using “very funny”) *Note: Strong adjectives mean “very” already, so we don’t say “very hilarious”. - Use “at all” with normal adjectives in negative statements. You should use “at all” when there isn’t a strong negative adjective, or you don’t know one. My sister was terrified of my new pet spider. She wasn’t happy at all. (Sounds more interesting than just using “happy”) - Use descriptive words, NOT simple words. You should use interesting words with similar meanings to simpler words, like “fantastic” instead of “good”. The racing car flew past us. (Sounds more interesting than using “drove”) The movie was amazing, and the special effects were spectacular. (Sounds more interesting than using “very good”) |
