Each year, the United States government publishes the Occupational Outlook Handbook. This large book lists over 250 kinds of jobs. It describes job duties, working conditions, education needed, and salary. Most importantly, it gives the job outlook. That is, it tells how many openings there will be for each job in the coming years. The job outlook may be excellent, good, or poor. This unit will look at the job outlook for seven jobs.
The job outlook for auto mechanics is good. The number of cars will continue to grow. Because cars are so expensive, people are keeping their cars longer. In the future, their cars will need more repairs.
Computer programmers will be in demand and the job outlook is excellent. There are more than 50 million computers in the offices and homes in the United States. Both companies and individuals depend on computers for information, record keeping, and services.
The men and women who deliver the mail every day face a poor job future. Companies will use computers and fax machines to send information.
The job outlook for nurses is excellent. The population is increasing and people are living longer. Most jobs will open in large city hospitals and in country areas.
The outlook for travel agents is excellent. As incomes rise, people will take more vacations. Many couples, especially older couples, are taking two vacations a year. Charter flights, tour, and lower air fares will encourage more people to travel.
Because of the concern about safety and crime, one of the fastest growing jobs in the country is security guard. Guards are needed in prisons, but now they are also present in airports, stores, government buildings, and at sports events.
Finally, the job outlook for teachers is good. The school age population is increasing, especially in the South and West. Many teachers are in their forties and fifties and will retire in the next ten years.
The Occupational Outlook Handbook is in the reference section of the library. It can tell you if the work you are interested in has a future or not.
