For centuries, poets, writers and musicians have mentioned the ao dai in poems, novels and songs. The ao dai is the traditional dress of Vietnamese women. It consists of a long silk tunic that is slit on the sides and worn over loose pants. Traditionally, it was frequently worn bv both men and women. The desian and material used for men were different from those used for women. Nowadays, women usually wear it, especially on special occasions. However, many Vietnamese women today often prefer to wear modern clothing at work, because it is more convenient.
Now fashion designers want to change the traditional ao dai. Some have printed lines of poetry on the ao dai, so they look modern and very fashionable. Other designers have taken inspiration from Vietnam’s ethnic minorities.
They have visited villages and studied traditional designs and symbols such as suns, stars, crosses, and stripes. They have added these patterns to the ao dai, so Vietnamese women can continue to wear the unique dress, which is now both traditional and fashionable.

Trải qua nhiều thế kỉ, những thi sĩ, văn sĩ và nhạc sĩ đã đề cập đến áo dài trong những tác phẩm thi ca, tiểu thuyết và ca khúc. Ao dài là trang phục truyền thống của người phụ nữ Việt Nam. Ao dài bao gồm 1 áo tơ lụa rộng, dài, được xẻ 2 bên tà áo và mặc phủ ngoài quần ống rộng. Theo truyền thống, áo dài thường xuyên được cả đàn ông và phụ nữ mặc. Kiểu dáng thiết kế và chất liệu sử dụng may áo dài cho đàn ông thì khác vổi áo của phụ nữ . Ngày nay, phụ nữ vẫn thường mặc áo dài, nhất là vào những dịp đặc biệt. Tuy nhiên, nhiều phụ nữ hiện nay thường thích mặc những trang phục hiện đại tại công sở hơn, vì nó tiện lợi hơn.
Hiện nay, nhiều nhà thiết kế thời trang muốn thay đổi áo dài truyền thông. Một số nhà thiết kế đã in những dòng thơ trên áo dài, vì vậy trông chúng hiện đại và thời trang hơn, số khác lại lấy cảm hứng từ những dân tộc thiểu số của Việt Nam.
Họ đã đến thăm viếng nhiều thôn xóm, bản làng và nghiên cứu những kiểu dáng thiết kế và biểu tượng truyền thống như mặt trời, ngôi sao, đường chéo, đường sọc. Họ đã thêm thắt những hoa văn, họa tiết này vào chiếc áo dài, do đó phụ nữ Việt Nam có thể tiếp tục mặc chiếc áo độc đáo này, mà giờ đây nó vừa mang vẻ truyền thống, lại vừa hợp thời trang.
